The Bottom of the Pile

Matthew Butcher writing on why pay inequality matters, and why we should be focusing on those at the bottom as well as at the top. A report by the High Pay Commission, launched today, suggests that the gap between Britain's rich and everyone else is set to widen over the…

Opposing NHS Reform

Harry Wells writes for us today on why the Left should oppose the NHS reforms. Now seems like a good time to point and laugh at Andrew Lansley's 'reforms' for the NHS; they've essentially come to a standstill in the face of public backlash and concern from the medical profession. It would be unfortunate, however, if the left were not to take what is essentially yet another Thatcherite privatisation,…

Settle The Question Right

Elliot Folan, an electoral reform campaigner and a Young Green, gives us his thoughts on the result of the AV referendum last week. On May 5th, 2011, Britain's voters rejected the Alternative Vote. In an atmosphere of negative campaigning, with lies, propaganda and myths thrown about by both sides in the referendum, it's hardly surprising that only 42% of people actually bothered to vote. And that…

Batteries Not Included - Chickens!

A post today on something non-election - chickens! Rob Pell from Norwich tells us why he thinks chicken keeping is a brilliant idea. Picture this, if you will. It is early on a Friday evening in a village just south of Norwich. The A47 bypass is a low murmur in the distance. The throaty bass woo-woo-oo song of numerous fat woodpigeons is occasionally interjected with a raspy kekk-kekk call from a…

Local Election Results

A congratulations to all for the results of the local and Welsh elections yesterday. The Greens have had a fantastic result gaining 14 new councillors. We now have 130 across England, up from 116. Additionally Brighton Greens gained control of the council, an amazing achievement. In the Welsh Assembly elections we sadly didn't gain a seat, but increased our vote share in our target region despite a…

Why I'm Voting Green V

This is from Chris Jarvis, about why he's voting Green on May 5th. We're still taking submissions for this series, so email yours in to younggreensblog@gmail.com. I'm voting Green on May 5th because the Green Party is the one real political alternative to the government agenda of cuts. The Liberal Democrats are in government with the Tories and the Labour Party is also committed to cutting huge…

Why I'm Voting Green IV

Today's post is from Duncan Davis, who doesn't actually have a Green candidate to vote for. Instead, he writes about why it's important to vote for people who will represent you, including the Greens.

Why I'm Voting Green III

Another post in our series. This one is from Douglas Rouxel, a Young Green from Westborough. He blogs here: http://greenwestborough.wordpress.com/. Enjoy! In the first instance, I'm voting Green because I'm standing in the ward that I live in, and not voting for myself would be a silly thing to do. There are however much broader reasons…

Another post about why we're voting Green, this time from Jack Parker in Cardiff. We'll be running posts on this subject until the local elections on May 5th, so if you'd like to contribute email 200-300 words on the subject to younggreensblog@gmail.com . Why am I voting Green? It's difficult to sum up in so few words, but in summary I guess it's because my generation is being increasingly burdened…
