Reform PIP
The Reform PIP sub-committee are campaigning to raise awareness about the disproportionate discrimination young people face accessing disability support benefits.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a welfare benefit intended to help cover the additional costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability. The Young Greens believe that the way that PIP is currently assessed and awarded needs to be reformed as the process is inaccessible for many potential claimants. The entire process causes unesscessary stress and anxiety to people and the process, from start to finish – including the potential for appeals – can take up to 24 months.
The Reform PIP! Campaign are currently working on several different projects to draw attention to these issues and campaign for change:
1. Producing a guidance document to support PIP claimants through the process.
2. Producing an informational video and podcast to raise awareness of the issue.
3. Writing a policy statement for the Green Party to adopt specifically referring to PIP.
Members can view (and contribute to) the policy statement here
4. Writing a report on the experience of young people who claim PIP, particularly focusing on the appeals process claimants often go through.
5. Writing a manifesto for a different kind of disability benefit, based on Green values
