October marks Black History Month, an important opportunity to recognise and reflect upon the histories, experiences and contributions of Black communities across the world.
Black History Month holds particular significance when considering the historical oppression, exploitation and suppression of Black communities. The legacies of slavery, colonialism and racial discrimination continue to shape our societies today, contributing to the institutionalised racism and inequalities that Black communities continue to experience. Recognising these histories is essential to understanding the discrimination that persists today and the importance of continuing to challenge it.
However, Black History Month also provides an opportunity to celebrate the beauty, resilience and diversity of Black cultures. Despite centuries of oppression and attempts to suppress our histories and identities, Black communities have continued to preserve, develop and share our rich cultural heritage.
To mark this important month, we would like to invite you to our Black History Month event, which will be both educational and celebratory.
The event will provide an opportunity to reflect upon Black history and its continuing relevance, whilst celebrating the cultures and identities of the Black diaspora. There will be food, music and opportunities for discussion and celebration, recognising the contributions and cultural richness of Black communities.
We also encourage you to bring flags representing your diasporas and heritage, as an opportunity to recognise the diversity of Black identities and the histories connected to them.
We hope this event will provide a welcoming space for education, reflection and solidarity, whilst giving Black communities an opportunity to celebrate our heritage and identities with pride.
Understanding the injustices of the past and our continuing consequences is an important part of recognising Black history. Equally, we must ensure that the achievements, voices and cultures of Black communities receive the recognition and appreciation they deserve.
We hope you will be able to join us for this important occasion.
